There may be hard times ahead…
14th December 2011
With the UK well and truly in one of the worst recessions of all time and Europe set to follow (not to mention the rest of the world), now isn’t the time to be getting rid of anything that may be used in the future.
In today’s wasteful and disposable society, people often get rid of items through landfill sites or other means that they may actually come to need in the future. With this in mind, we would recommend storing any items that may be of use in the months or years ahead. Here are just a few examples:
- Televisions , entertainment equipment and electricals – many people replace equipment with newer models and versions despite the fact that their previous model is still in full working order. We would recommend storing these items as a contingency plan. For example if your new television stops working in three years’ time (just outside it’s warranty period) then you might not have the funds available at that time to repair or replace it. Instead you can simply get your older model out of storage and use that until you have the money to purchase a replacement.
- Sports equipment – over the Christmas period or in the January sales that follow, a lot of people tend to buy replacement sports equipment. This may include anything from new trainers to tennis racquets, golf clubs to clothing. Again there may not be anything actually wrong with the older models so these can be stored for the future to create spares if necessary.
- Baby items – if you are a young family with only one child, in the future you may decide to have another baby, in which case the items you bought for your first including cots, clothing, toys and baby baths will come in handy for the second one. Even if you don’t have the intention of having any more children in the coming years, it may still be worthwhile storing these items in case you decide to have another child at some point (and accidents do happen!).
- Clothing – in the New Year, many people decide to diet and end up losing weight which is great news. However it may leave you with a variety of clothing items that no larger fit. Resist the urge to dispose of these clothes as the unfortunate fact is that you may put this weight back on in the future, especially if it was a fad diet.
