How to be a smart shopper

To reduce wasteful spending and avoid ending up with lots of things you don’t really want, here are a few suggestions:

This Festive Season, all shopaholics are thrilled at the prospect of grabbing a bargain at the seasonal sales. We had Black Friday, Cyber Monday and now the Christmas Sales are in full swing, hotly followed by the craziness of the January sales!  Before shopping, in order to save money and avoid ending up with lots of things you don’t really want, here are a few suggestions to help you:

  • Create a shopping list

Keep all the items you want in your cart, list them one by one along with the price. As long as you have a smart phone, many free apps can help you, such as Google Keep, Microsoft OneNote, Evernote, etc.  If you choose online shopping, save items into the shopping cart, it is easy to then compare the prices on multiple sites.

  • Cooling off period

What you want is not always what you need. Shortlist your desires and set up a cooling off period, such as a week. Most impulsive desires decreases after this period and you would have filtered out what you don’t need. Keep in mind though that some impulses may last much longer.

  • Set Shopping Quotas

Impulse shopping could potentially lead to some serious financial difficulties especially if you are purchasing too freely with your credit cards. Be sure to set a purchase quota to keep things within your means. Think it through carefully and set it as a lump sum each month or as a proportion of your pay.

  • Selective purchases

Sometimes you will see must have items which you may not be able to find or buy again in the future, such as collectibles or special edition products. This is when you have to be a bit more selective and maybe even consider if there is a good resell value (or investment value) before your purchase. That way, you won’t end up buying things that end up as junk.
